tying for the new season
Well, spent the morning getting my spools all ready – at the end of last fishing season I thought I would try letting my fly lines all hang loose over the winter… and see if that resolves the line memory issues that I’ve encountered.
Afterwards, I felt inspired… and proceeded to tie up a couple flys.
The first fly I tied was my own version of a Hairy Carey fly that I received in the International Fly Swap that I participated in last winter. This Hairy Carey was tied by the NLFT president, Brian. I’ve tied up Blue versions using the bluer pheasant rump feathers… but I really liked the claret color – so I had picked up some claret pheasant rump, and some claret dubbing (unfortunately I couldn’t find claret seal dubbing… so used claret rabbit fur instead). To really make this one different, I added a Marc Petitjean ‘Magic Head’ to it.
Marc Petitjean did a presentation at our club a couple months back… and had a chance to see these things in action… and do they ever give a nice action to the fly! I think that they should work nicely with the pheasant rump feathers used in the wing of the Hairy Carey. Will test it out in the bathtub to be sure… hopefully I didn’t cut too much off the bottom of the magic head!
The other fly I tied was a ‘Bow River Bugger’ – been a while since I tied anything using Marabou – and forgot how messy it can be! Oh well… I did this with a deer hair head, so I was making a mess from the get go
I’ll add a couple pix of the end results in the next day or so.
Cheers for now!
