Packing it away…

Posted at 3:02 pm under fly fishing

Well, now that my last fly fishing trip of the season is done, it’s time to get things put away so that it will all be good to go next season. I read that it’s a good practice to take the lines off the reels over the winter… that it helps minimize line memeory. I’ve noticed that a couple of my lines had quite pronounced memory… which makes them a little more difficult to work with… the line doesn’t lay out across the water as nicely as it should.

So…now the lines are hanging from a coat rack in my office. One thing I noticed, is that my 3 sink has a number of nicks in it. I’m sure that’s not a good thing… so I think that I might retire it, and replace it with a new one over the winter.

I also pulled the rod apart, and gave it a good wipe down. The cleaning cloth was instantly green. That was quite the algae bloom at Swan last month!

Looking over my reels, I noticed that my SA reel has some rust inside. Didn’t use this one much this year… prefering the action and size of the Okuma Sierra I bought last season. Still, nothing wrong with having a spare (and one for the kids to start with one day). Perhaps I’ll see if the Reel Doctor can clean it up, and get the reel working better. The drag on it sucks completely.
